OUR STORY
2017 was a hard year. I was in the middle of my Master's degree, and just 13 days before my wedding in June, my mom, who was routinely in the hospital, unexpectedly died of heart failure. Two months later, we bought a house and moved from Vancouver to North Delta, BC. While finishing some last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve that year, we were broadsided by a F150 that ran a red light, and my car was totalled. I was 26 weeks pregnant at the time and it was terrifying. Miraculously, my husband, unborn baby, and I were not seriously injured physically.
I gave birth to a healthy baby boy in March of 2018. As a new mother, I struggled with so many substantial changes and traumatic events occurring in my life in such a short period of time. I ached for my mom, who I had so many questions about motherhood for, and following the car accident, I'd developed moderate anxiety while driving. Around this time during my maternity leave, I was also in the thick of my Master's research project and battling chronic sleep-deprivation, subtly slipping into a dark, depressive place.
As a career airline pilot who consistently functions well in high-stress environments, I was baffled and frustrated with my emotional challenges. I had always believed that I was strong and resilient, yet my mind seemed to be taking me in new, debilitating directions that I was unfamiliar with. Knowing I needed to take action, I remembered a conversation I'd had years before with a fellow pilot who'd tried neurofeedback to help him overcome a late-life development of claustrophobia. He said neurofeedback had transformed his life. At this point, I realized this was something that I needed to seek out. I soon found a neurofeedback provider, and after renting a NeurOptimal® system for a month, I decided I would invest in purchasing my own equipment. In January of 2020, I became a certified Basic NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback Trainer through the Zengar Institute and finished the Advanced Certification course in August of 2022.

Just like my fellow pilot, neurofeedback has been transformational for me. Not only did it pull me from the depths of postpartum challenges, it helped reduce my anxiety while driving, and has changed me in ways I wasn't expecting. It has improved my ability to focus, given me more patience as a mom and as a partner, and has enabled me to "bounce-back" from emotional upsets faster and more effectively. Throughout the the stresses of the pandemic, it has helped keep me calm, caring, and optimistic. Overall, neurofeedback has made me a better person.
My experience has inspired me to spread the word about the many benefits of neurofeedback and bring it to my community. So, if you find yourself in a place where you feel stuck or are struggling to overcome any challenges in your life, I invite you to explore this non-invasive, non-medicinal option. If you have any questions, please book a call with me and let's discuss how neurofeedback might be able to help transform your life, too. |
